Half board, could be better

Went for a midweek half board stay at Sand Bay Holiday Village. The booking process was simple enough on the website. I chose the bungalow accommodation, which was spacious. However, I found the beds pretty uncomfortable; definitely need an upgrade there. The buffet breakfast and three-course dinner were adequate for the price point, but the choices didn't change much day-to-day. The indoor heated swimming pool was a nice bonus and well-maintained. Customer service was generally helpful, though getting an answer about an entertainment schedule change took a couple of calls. Good value for a budget break, but don't expect luxury. It's an honest, no-frills place.

Weekend at Sand Bay

My partner and I just got back from a 60s weekend at Sand Bay Holiday Village. Booking online was straightforward, found the half board option easily. We chose a standard chalet; it was basic but clean. Food in the buffet restaurant was okay, typical holiday park fare. Check-in was a bit slow, took about 25 minutes standing in line, but the staff were friendly enough once we got to the desk. The live cabaret entertainment was the highlight, really got us dancing. Overall, it was a good value for a short break, especially for the entertainment.

Good adults-only break

Booked an adults-only break at Sand Bay. Accommodation was fine, nothing fancy. Entertainment was good, particularly the 70s weekend vibe. Had a decent time for the price.

Anyone know if you get towels and bedding included with the chalets, or do I need to pack my own?

F Faith A. 1 month ago
Nah, you gotta bring your own for standard chalets. I think club apartments might include them, but definitely not the basic ones.

My mate went recently and said they had to bring everything. Better off assuming you need to pack them just in case.

How do those Sun newspaper holiday deals work for Pontins? Is it like a proper discount or just a faff to book?

T Troy 1 month ago
They're legit, but you usually have to collect codes from the paper and book through a special link. Can save a ton though.

It's a bit of a process with collecting codes but totally worth it. Got a week for like a hundred quid a few years back.

Has anyone ever stayed at a Pontins and then at a Butlins? What's the main difference, like is Pontins way worse or just different?

C Cleo J. 1 month ago
Butlins is definitely a step up in terms of modern facilities and entertainment, but Pontins is way cheaper. You get what you pay for, basically. Pontins is more no-frills, old school vibe.

I'd say Butlins is more 'slick' and has bigger name acts sometimes. Pontins is more budget-friendly and a bit more 'traditional' holiday camp feel. Both can be fun depending on what you're after.

Thinking of doing one of the themed weekends, like the 60s or 70s one. Are they actually good, or just a bit cheesy?

L Lisa 3 weeks ago
They're super cheesy, but in the best way! Everyone really gets into it with the costumes and dancing. If you like that vibe, you'll love it.

Honestly, it's what you make of it. If you go in expecting a bit of fun and don't take it too seriously, they're a blast. The live acts are usually decent.

Is WiFi available at Pontins? Need to know if I'll be able to get some work done or just completely switch off.

N Nick B. 1 week ago
It's pretty patchy, even if they say they have it. Don't rely on it for anything important, probably better to assume no signal for real work.

I think some resorts have it in communal areas, but don't count on it in your chalet. I'd plan to switch off if I were you.
